Hungary has escalated its regulatory crackdown on cryptocurrency trading, implementing severe penalties under its updated criminal code effective 1 July 2025. Individuals caught trading on unlicensed platforms now face prison sentences ranging from two to five years, depending on transaction volumes. Even minor trades exceeding HUF 5 million (~$14,600) trigger legal consequences, positioning Hungary as Europe's most restrictive jurisdiction for retail crypto activity.

Service providers face harsher repercussions, with potential eight-year sentences for large-scale operations. The legislation has already prompted Revolut to withdraw crypto services in Hungary, signaling immediate market impact. This draconian approach contrasts sharply with the EU's broader efforts to harmonize crypto regulations under MiCA.
